[This is a short video post from a ponytailed guy in a white lab coat. Someone must have convinced him not to wear the Black Feathery Coat of Revolutionary Doom while working in the clinic.]

The clinic staff is down by a few. Possibly lucky for them, if it means they've gone home, but not so lucky for us. With the conscript -- pardon me, the "transport" population growing in number, we'll need more healers and medics. Not only for the clinic itself. We're also the people who patch you up when all of us get rounded up and sent into battle for the Initiative.

We're a fairly friendly lot, and we're not picky about credentials, as there's hardly a universal standard to go by. I'm a mage and a healer; the fellow who runs the clinic with me, Ashraf Salib, is also a healer. We've also got doctors who use technology rather than magic. And we're happy to teach those who are interested in learning, whatever talents you may bring to the table.

What we don't have at all is a person who specializes in teeth. Did you know how profoundly the condition of your teeth and gums can affect your health? I'll freely confess I didn't. I do now.

Also, we haven't got any psychologists. [The word is a somewhat recent addition to Anders' vocabulary -- in the past month or two, he's learned a little about the subject, enough to know he has no idea what it involves.] That's something many of us could probably use, given the pleasant tasks the Initiative likes to set us from time to time.

I'll say this now, because you might be wondering: We don't report your condition to the Initiative. We don't report your visits, or your diagnosis. That's the difference between us and the Initiative hospital: we've got no interest in tracking or managing you.

We do what we like with what they've given us. But the supplies do come from the Initiative. So did the training in what devices weren't already familiar to our staff, things that originate in this world rather than the ones we're from. And yes, it is not outside the realm of possibility that they've put some surveillance in place. The same principle applies to this network, and to the apartments most of us live in, and to everything else in this city. It's best not to delude ourselves on that score.

But, then, if you're seeing this message, you're using the network, and you've already accepted that inevitability. [He's rambling a little now...] Anyhow. Yes. Reply to me, or send a note to Ashraf Salib, or drop by, or whatever you like.

Honestly, even if it's not something you'd like to do as a career, it's always good to have some skills in case of emergency. You'd certainly be welcome. Are you a mage of any sort? It's all right if you're not. That being said, if you hate mages, you won't be comfortable here.

[WELL ANDERS THAT WAS QUITE THE UPFRONT MESSAGE ABOUT MAGES. Claire blinks at him.. then smiles a little nervously.] No, I'd like to be able to help. I'm no expert. Just basic first aid, anatomy.. Biology.

... And I can't say I've ever really met a mage, so no biases here. [:3]

[oh Claire this is only the beginning of your mage-awareness education ...]

Anatomy and biology are more than many people ever learn. That's fantastic.

I ... [He looks a bit sheepish.] Haven't thought of a good term. For non-magical healers. People who don't know magic, but use other things to help. I mean, you're not herbalists.

[A little, shy smile.] Just basics, again. [Mostly through becoming acutely aware of her own anatomy through having to put herself back together again. Plus that one time she woke up flayed open on an autopsy table. Those memories of what goes where and how it fits together.. KIND OF BURNED INTO HER BRAIN FOREVER.]

We call them Doctors, or Nurses, or sometimes EMTs? My uncle's a Nurse. They're more.. Focused on personal patient care, and the Doctors are the textbook experts. EMTs are like.. uh, emergency healers? They know enough to possibly save a life in an emergency, but less knowledgeable about the recovery.

Does that make sense?

[It's taken Emma a long time to make the decision to volunteer. She doesn't want to be bothered, but the idea of a city full of untreated psychoses bothers her far more than an interruption in her busy schedule of being annoyed at the Initiative.

Hey, Anders. It's the lady who explained psychology to you.]

I'm a licensed [sex] therapist.

[And a telepath, but she's not open about that yet.]

[Anders remembers this explanation well. It was notable for the amount of sense it made! He only wishes he'd taken notes.]

Emma Frost! Why didn't you say so? Please. We need you desperately.

There's also a bit of money involved -- not much. [Didn't think to mention it in the main message because, well, Anders. Who needs money for healing? Helping people is reward enough, right?]

[Anders, sweetie, there are logs. You can just listen to her explain it again.]

Counseling isn't like setting a broken bone. It's more like treating cancer--long and tiring. I'm taking on a huge responsibility if I'm the only therapist available.

[aka "only send me the non-functional crazies 'cause I don't have time for the ones whose parents didn't get them that pony they wanted for Christmas"]

Maybe we could start teaching each other skills we don't have? I don't think I would be able to teach someone white magic, but.. maybe someone could teach the healers first aid.

You mightn't be able to teach everyone white magic, as you call it. But you could teach people who've got a talent and haven't learned to control it, or to use it to their fullest potential. And you're right, we really ought to have everyone learn first aid. After all, even the strongest mage can get tapped out, if a battle goes on long enough, and without mana or lyrium to replenish it, we'd be in a sorry state indeed.

You wouldn't be interested in organizing some sort of program for this, would you?

I could try my best and help. I'll do whatever I can do, Anders. [ she really did want to help however possible; if organizing some kind of tutoring program within the clinic was how, she'd be more than happy. ] Trading skills will allow us to be more diverse, yes?

Well, I guess I could try to be helpful.

[As far as Anders is concerned, that's enthusiasm enough. Once you've travelled with Fenris, past master of deadpan, you get used to Understatement.]

That would be much appreciated. What sort of experience have you got? And what is your opinion of mages?

Honestly, not much, but I've got a Water Rune and I don't like unnecessary death.

[ He doesn't know what to make of this mage question. ]

The man I work for back home is a priest and an accomplished magician, [ But then! ] Maybe you can explain what you mean.

[ a little wryly: ] You begin to run the risk of sounding paranoid, my friend.

Thought I'd forestall the most obvious objections. We've got a load of new conscripts in and from the looks of the network they're none too trusting of our hosts.

I can't say I blame them, much.

But we've got to do what we can with what we have.

Preemptive, of course. Still, it is somewhat a gloomy foot to set out on.

What can I say? It's a talent of mine.

I'm a registered nurse back home. I'd be more than willing to help out in the clinic.

[Now that the mun has checked the FAQ to refresh her memory, we can say with confidence that Anders knows Peter's name, because the names appear next to the posts unless otherwise specified. Right! Yes! Therefore:]

Ah, yes! You were the one who talked to Ashraf about joining the staff. We can use your expertise.

Claire has been telling me about all the titles. Doctors, nurses, and that. I suppose I would be a nurse, too, by those standards. A magical nurse.

Uh... I'm not really magical, though. [unless his abilities would be considered magical here. Who knows] I don't know magic, I mean.

That's all right. More than all right, really -- just as long as you haven't got anything against magic, or the use of it.

I've never seen it in person, but I don't think I'd have a problem.

What about teeth?

Not only teeth. Gums, too. [He bares his teeth to show his gums. They're in remarkable condition for someone from a quasi-medieval fantasy world! The game developers didn't feel like giving everyone rotten teeth, perhaps. Let's call it a naturally fluoridated water supply for all of Thedas??? who knows

If your teeth or your gums aren't cared for, you can get an infection, and it'll travel through your whole body. Awful.

What kind of infection?

It's called septicaemia [and he spells it out, letter by letter, to make sure]. Very nasty. Once the infection's in your bloodstream, it can get anywhere, in any organ.

[This ... calls for baby talk. One can only hope Solomon's dignity is not unduly affronted -- it wouldn't occur to Anders that Solomon might object.]

[In a more normal tone of voice -- well, that is to say, it's neither falsetto nor sing-song; Anders is still very excited, audibly so:]

[it doesn't seem like Solomon minds! her certainly likes the attention. perhaps he's used to it? Rosalyn smiles though, some people don't take him very seriously so she's happy Anders does.

Hehe, he does! Right? [she pats the poring's head before turning back to the feed, looking just as excited!]

Apples are his favorite, though he doesn't mind eating other things. Well... except for vegetables. He can be picky when he wants to be. I may have spoiled him too much...

[well, this sounds a lot more like something he'd be comfortable with than... anything else he's been brought here to do.]

Not picky about credentials? How do you feel about med students?

How do I feel about them? As long as they're not prejudiced against mages, I'm extremely fond of med students. Might you happen to be one?

Finally, an organization that's worth something. Yes. Sign me up.

So I shall. [As the names appear beside messages and posts unless the sender contrives otherwise, Anders can put face to name, and manages to pronounce the name without mangling it. It's not altogether un-Thedosian, this name.] Adrasteius Bloodspeaker, then. What skills are you bringing us?

I can offer my talents with patching up wounds and I know enough about poisons to create vials of anti-venom.

Anti-venom ... now, that could be extremely useful indeed. We'd be delighted to have you.

Anders! Could I help? I know I'm miserable with healing spells - do you remember the time you tried to teach me and I boiled all the water instead? - but I would like to help.

Could I? [Yeah, her face? It is the most desperately hopeful of faces.] I'll wear shoes for you. If I have to. To help.

[Oh honey SHOES] I ... do remember that, yes. The boiling wasn't an altogether unhelpful talent, just not what that particular case needed.

[Boiling linens. Blood mage laundry service!]

Look, there are these sort of little paper slippers we've got. Would those make an acceptable compromise?

[She considers this for a moment. Even though she really hates shoes... she wants to help Anders more. She nods.]

I'll wear the shoes if it means I can help.

Truly, the teeth?

If that is the case, there are many in Ferelden that would benefit from a healer of the teeth. Something to think about.

I had that thought myself. In the Tower we used a dentifrice -- a sort of gritty paste for the teeth; I expect there might have been wide swathes of the population unused to purchasing or making such things, or perhaps without ready access to a Formari herbalist.

As monarch, you might wish to undertake a dental health campaign, perhaps.

It would at least be a good use of the castle's resources.

[And people are always saying Ferelden is barbaric. Maybe this will help with that silly perception.]

[Goodness someone looks like he had too much caffeine or something. He's having trouble holding still and keeps fidgeting like he wants to get up and pace. But his smile is warm and if he seems a bit scattered, he looks like he means well. His hair is loose today, and his glasses have slipped down to the tip of his nose. He doesn't seem to notice.]

A clinic! Yes, that's just what I need now that I'm stuck here. I'd be happy to help. Where--

Oh. [He laughs, smoothing down his own (now looking worn) white coat. When he talks it tumbles out fast, like he's rushing, or just can't slow down.]

I'm Dr. Isaac Hunter. By way of UC Davis-- That wouldn't mean anything to you, would it?

[A brief pause.] Do you really have magic?

[It might be hard to imagine someone who's acting very much like a hyper little kid as a competent doctor, but there you have it.]

[Despite certain people's hang-ups about her magic, she's already decided she's going to embrace this wonderful land where it's apparently perfectly okay, even great, to have magic.]

I know a little healing magic, would that be good for anything at all?

[She thinks it's a little, honestly she has no idea just what her magical ability can do. Stupid new powers and all that.]

Anders, hello! I will confess, my areas of study were very light on psychology and dentistry. But I do know some things- until a specialist is found, I could help.

I know some field medicine and healing--I can't say I'd be suited for everyday nursing, but I could help in a pinch.
